Group Exhibition : CURB. February 3 - February 17, 2022 @ The Untitled Void Gallery

Held at The Untitled Void from February 3 to 17, 2022, "CURB." brought together Jaeyoung Shin, Sookhyun Yang, Seoyoung Je, Caroline Reize, and IVAAIU City. At the start of a new year — and in the early, hopeful days of a possible end to the pandemic — the show asked the audience to sit with a basic question about the environment and our place in it. Nature had shown visible signs of recovery while human activity paused, and the exhibition posed a prompt: as full activity returns, shouldn't we actively hold back the harm we're about to resume? "CURB.", meaning 'to restrain something bad,' placed works that warn about environmental impact next to works that simply celebrate nature and life, asking what exactly we need to hold back in order to protect what we want to keep.

A new media installation built around three screens arranged side by side. The left screen runs cellular automata as a mechanical record of evolution; the center screen carries natural forms drawn in curves. The right screen displays a StyleGAN that continuously trains on the frames produced by the other two; its outputs then feed back into the next round of training.

Mechanical and natural movement fed to the model in equal measure, to see what motion — and what rules — emerge between them.
